Friends of the Forest

The aims of the Society are:

» By voluntary effort to assist in the conservation of Ashdown Forest and the implementation of the Ashdown Forest Act.

» To provide funds for the purpose of supplementing in such manner as the Society thinks fit the resources available to the Board of Conservators.

» To encourage interest in the conservation, maintenance, preservation and peaceful enjoyment of the Forest by such means as the Society thinks fit.

Since the beginning in 1961, the Friends have bought many items of equipment which help in running the Forest efficiently. These include a radio communications system, a crane trailer, a fire-engine, a forage harvester, Rangers’ vans, the distance dial at Four Counties, picnic tables and a computer. In addition, the Friends try to buy appropriate land within the ancient Pale to re-incorporate it into the Forest, such as the woodland at Chelwood Vachery, and contribute to conversion work on the buildings at the Forest Centre.

You can become a member of the Friends by making donations to the Society. In exchange you receive no special rights or privileges on the Forest but you will be sent copies of the Ashdown Forest News and will be entitled to attend the annual general meeting. You will also gain the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to the maintenance of one of the most important open spaces in south east England.

The Friends financed the purchase of 1940 aerial photography of the Forest area; this kind of historical data is invaluable in monitoring how the vegetation on the Forest is changing and gives a fascinating insight into how the area was used.
